WHAT ARE INBOUND LINKS?

Inbound links are created when another website mentions your site in some way and creates a clickable link that points back to a page on your site.

This situation can be created in two different ways:

1. Your content is so extraordinarily good that people share the hell out of it organically

2. You create situations that bring awareness to your brand, then exchange value to a website for a link

Which scenario do you think most brands will find themselves in? Obviously it’s #2.

Inbound links are so coveted by websites in every industry because they’re still the foremost indication to both users and search engines of quality content.

If a QUALITY site is willing to link to another website, they are essentially vouching for that site and saying “This content is worthwhile and will answer your questions or give you the experience you’re after.”

Quality is the keyword here. It used to be that links were links and any link would do. But today, with the advancement of modern search engines, links pointing to a site are scrutinized by search algorithms and a website can be penalized if it has a ton of spammy, low-quality links pointing to it.

Links coming from high domain authority website are deemed as “quality” and those are the ones you want.

That’s what makes link building so complex these days. You’ve got to be creative if you want to create a high quality link profile.

HOW TO CREATE A LINK TO A WEBSITE

To compel another site to link back to your own requires the stars to align just a little bit. But you can do basic outreach on your end with one thing in mind.

Links are created primarily when an exchange of value is performed

This means that, first and foremost, if you already have a valuable online resource that people are loving, reach out to other sites in your niche and simply let them know about it. If they decide it’s worth it to share your resource with their audience they’ll do so organically and 9 times out of 10 link back to your site.

But what if you don’t already have a high-value resource that people will love to share online? That’s where the work comes in.

The idea is to focus on other link building efforts, primarily guest posting.

Here is my four step process for building quality links to a website with guest posting:

1. THE STRATEGY PHASE

To start, I get a fundamental overview of the website that I’ll be building links for.

I ask questions like:

– What does this site offer to its users?

– What subject matter are they here take in?

– What general quality and quantity of links does this site need?

Once I get a general context for the site, I can then formulate which types of links would be best to go after.

2. THE PROSPECTING PHASE

Next, we need to begin to find link opportunites that fit into the criteria we’ve defined in phase 1.

This process can take many different turns, but overall, it involves an advanced understanding of how to: s

1. Search for guest posting opportunites effeciently

2. Categorize and track all potential link opportunities

This process really takes shape in the form of spreadsheets and a thorough knowledge of how to use Google to find posting opportunities within the target vertical.

Prospecting is a pretty in-depth process that takes a lot of time to get right, but with a solid system you can have a steady stream of link opportunities waiting at any given moment.

3. THE OUTREACH PHASE

Next up is outreach. We draw from the link prospect list that is generated in step 2 to then reach out to these prospects and pitch them.

Each pitch is basically the same, but a personalized approach is always reccommended.

I essentially ask to create a piece of value for their site in exchange for a link.

When a response is recieved, all that’s required then is to narrow down the specifics of the value piece (content) that will be exchanged for a link.

4. THE CONTENT CREATION PHASE

Finally, when all prospects are organized and the specifics of responding sites are noted, this content must ultimately be created.

I use a team of talented content creators to produce valuable content pieces to specifications.

The depth and quality of this content varies depending on the value of the link overall, but typically content must be engaging and offer an excellent value to the other website’s readership to be considered worthwhile.
